how data works
How rankings get into the app
Each ranking is collected on a schedule matched to how often its publisher releases new editions: weekly rankings are checked around their usual release day, while irregular ones such as FIFA's are checked daily for a new edition. When a new edition appears, the app downloads it the next time you open that list with a connection.
Most rankings come straight from the publisher, including tennis and golf, which come from the official ATP, WTA, OWGR and Rolex Rankings sources and usually appear in the app on the Monday they're released. Table tennis, chess and Formula 1 are read from public sites that republish the official lists. Formula 1 and MotoGP standings are checked a few hours after each race ends.
The date at the top of a list is the publisher's date for that edition. Field hockey and squash are the exceptions: the FIH and PSA feeds don't include a ranking date, so the app shows the date it first saw the current ranking. Handball uses an independent Elo ranking from handballranking.com rather than an official IHF ranking, and is labeled ELO in the app.
Rankings are provided for information. If a number looks wrong, compare it with the publisher's site and let us know.
Typical publishing schedules
- WeeklyTennis (ATP, WTA), golf (OWGR, Rolex), rugby, badminton, table tennis, padel, beach volleyball and road cycling (UCI) publish new rankings each week. Judo, archery, fencing and climbing update after their events, often weekly in season, and darts and snooker after each ranking event.
- After every raceFormula 1 and MotoGP championship standings change after each Grand Prix.
- MonthlyFIDE publishes new chess rating lists, standard, rapid and blitz, on the 1st of each month.
- After international windows and eventsFIFA, FIBA and the WBSC (baseball, softball and Baseball5) publish when their match windows or tournaments finish, so weeks or months can pass between editions. The IIHF publishes once a year.
- As matches are playedICC cricket, FIVB volleyball, FIH field hockey, squash and handball rankings can move after individual matches, series and tournaments.
questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the app affiliated with FIFA, the ATP, Formula 1 or other governing bodies?
No. World Sport Rankings is an independent app made by BoolTek Labs. It displays rankings those organizations publish, and it names each publisher, but it is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
How do ranking alerts work, and why didn't I get one?
Turn alerts on from the card on Home or in Settings, under Alerts, and allow notifications. When a ranking your favorites appear in publishes a new edition, the app compares it with what you last saw and notifies you if your team's rank changed, a favorite player moved or a pinned ranking has a new #1.
If an alert seems late or missing, check that notifications for WS Rankings are on in iOS Settings and that Low Power Mode is off; iOS can delay background activity. Changes found between 10 pm and 7 am arrive at 8 am. See the privacy policy for what the app sends to deliver alerts.
Which widget sizes are there?
Small, medium and large on iPhone, plus extra large on iPad. On iPhone Duo, iOS offers small, medium and large. Touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget to choose Auto, My Team, My Players or Rankings, and which players to show.
Why is a ranking's date older than today?
Because that is the latest edition the publisher has released. FIFA's men's ranking, for example, is published only a few times a year. The date shown is the publisher's date for that edition, not the time the app last checked.
Does the app show live scores?
No. The app is about rankings. It does not show live scores, fixtures or match results.
Why do some lists have no movement arrows?
Arrows appear where the previous position is known. Chess, field hockey, fencing and climbing don't, so those lists show rank and points only.
Why isn't there a women's Test cricket ranking?
The ICC publishes women's team rankings for ODI and T20I cricket, and both are in the app. A women's Test team ranking is not part of the data the app collects.
Can I suggest a sport or report a wrong number?
Yes, please. Email support@boolteklabs.com with the sport, the ranking and what you are seeing.
