how they work
How the rankings are calculated
Chess rankings are based on Elo ratings. Each player has a rating, and after every rated game it goes up or down depending on the result and the opponent's rating. Beating a stronger player earns more than beating a weaker one.
FIDE keeps a separate rating for each time control, so a player's standard, rapid and blitz ranks can differ.
schedule
When they're published
FIDE publishes new rating lists for all three time controls on the first day of every month.
In the app: the lists are checked on the 1st, with retries if the new list isn't out yet. They are read from a public site that republishes FIDE's rating lists, and each list shows the date of FIDE's edition.

questions
Frequently asked questions
Why does chess say "Open" instead of "Men"?
That's FIDE's own naming. The open list includes all players, and women play in both open and women's events.
Why are there no movement arrows?
The source doesn't include last month's positions, so the list shows rank and rating only.
Are rapid and blitz ratings included?
Yes. Standard, Rapid and Blitz each have their own ranking under Chess, with open and women's lists.
